Current Situation
Situation Summary
Resources continue to be shared between both North and South Zones of the Monument Fire, as containment line is completed and reinforced. From Junction City to the end of Dutch Creek Road, firefighters are holding the fire line and patrolling the area. Near Maxwell Creek, crews are reinforcing the line and extinguishing hot spots. In the Barker Creek area, firefighters have completed containment line, are conducting line improvements and mop-up operations. West from Barker Creek to Cedar Gulch, no forward movement of the fire was observed, and crews continue to patrol the area. Containment lines are established in the Cedar Gulch area, firefighters are strengthening the line and extinguishing hot spots. Northwest of Cedar Gulch, crews are constructing direct fire line working towards the North Zone border, north of Sims Gap. The priority for Hyampom Road and the Sims Gap area will be construction of contingency lines.
Warming temperatures will be moderated today by the return of dense smoke over portions of the fire. A northwest wind will remain above the fire; however, winds will generally be terrain driven. Humidity will fall to mid-teens where the smoke has cleared.
Northern California has experienced large fire activity and will likely experience an extended fire season. Fires burning in northern California are exhibiting extreme fire growth based on critical fuel conditions. The prioritization of resources is always based on life, property, and natural resources. Under these drought conditions, wildfires are burning rapidly with extreme severity and have traveled up to 8 miles in a single day. Fire spread is fuel driven and does not depend on wind speed, as we have seen in previous years. Firefighters are experiencing conditions never seen before, such as increased rates of spread, spotting and active nighttime burning. We coordinate very closely with the US Forest Service and CalOES for our local and out of state partners, to ensure resources are shared.
