Current Situation
Situation Summary
INITIAL SITUATION: Forest Service Firefighters, along with firefighters from other agencies, including the City of Highland and San Bernardino County, responded to a reported wildland fire on Baseline Road at about 6:00 PM on September 5, 2024. Arriving engines reported several acres on fire and immediately requested more resources, including multiple additional fixed wing and helicopters.
Update 10/5/24: Crews continued to hold the Line Fire close to its current footprint, with minimal growth since yesterday. Around the fire perimeter where it has been contained, crews monitored and patrolled the lines with no issues or challenges. Where the fire line is still active, crews worked hard to improve and hold the lines, again with no issues or challenges. In the northeast corner of the fire, sawyer crews focused on removing hazardous trees which allowed safer access for firefighters allowing them to mop up deeper into the fire area.
Yesterday, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department lifted the remaining evacuation warnings for the city of Big Bear Lake and they downgraded Angelus Oaks to “Evacuation Warning” status. Highway 38 is now open to Angelus Oaks from the west, but it remains closed due to firefighter operations beyond Angelus Oaks to Lake Williams Drive, five miles east of Big Bear Lake. The Seven Oaks area remains under an Evacuation Warning.
Today, most crews will continue patrolling, monitoring and strengthening lines. Additional crews will transition to repairing areas impacted by suppression activities. Conditions remain very dry and all crews will remain vigilant for any new or increased fire activity. Working through above normal temperatures and occasional wind gusts up to 20 mph, fire crews continued to keep the Line Fire within its current footprint, except for a small, 5-acre growth which was quickly attacked and lined by crews. Pockets of vegetation within the perimeter of the fire generated some fire activity and smoke but did not threaten existing lines as crews and aircraft worked to minimize fire activity.
The closure orders for the forest remain in place.

Road Closures
- Plan ahead on State Highways - Visit Division of Traffic Operations - Road Information - California Highway Information.
- SR-330 closed both directions from Highland Ave to Live Oak. Fire crews still active in the area. Caltrans crews started assessing damages. There is no ETA for reopening State Route 330 at this time.
- Highway 38 is closed north of Angelus Oaks at the intersection of the Middle Control Road and 38 on the south end and closed at the north end by the Lake Williams community at Lakewood Drive and 38.
- Highway 18 is open for evacuees out of Big Bear on both sides (Running Springs & Lucerne)
Forest Closure Order: San Bernardino National Forest has issued Forest Order NO. 05-12-00-24-10, creating a Forest Closure Area around the Line Fire. All National Forest lands, trails, and roads within that zone are closed to the public. Please know that these orders are reviewed frequently and will grow or shrink as needed based on the size and risks associated with the fire.
